Michael worked as a professional photographer in the Kansas City area for 20 years. He started as a wedding photographer’s assistant and worked his way up to striking out on his own. In those years, Michael, with the help of his wife, Ann, photographed 330 weddings and innumerable individual, family, and group portraits and other special events. His closed his business in 2012 when he moved with Ann to St. Augustine to escape the icy Kansas winters.
Upon arriving in Florida, Michael took a break from photography. He invented and marketed new automotive and sport fishing accessories. After a three-year hiatus from photography, and with the encouragement of a local art gallery owner, Michael resumed production of his fine art photography. He uses a technique he developed of brushing acrylic gel onto each photographic print to protective the surface and create texture. The acrylic coating allows Michael to frame his art without needing to cover it with glass. In the fall of 2019, Michael decided to try his hand at painting. He began by painting local beach scenes on his SunStop Visors (one of his very useful inventions, which blocks the sun by sliding up behind a car’s rearview mirror). The painted visors have been selling well, so he has followed up by painting those same beach scenes on 5” x 7” wooden boxes that he makes in his workshop. These are perfect for displaying in small spaces, as on a bookshelf or mantel.
