Cindy Ward has been fascinated with functional ceramics for as long as she can remember. “I enjoy the simplicity of the pots that I use every day and I never tire of the shape, the feel, and the purpose of the vessels. I will cradle a bowl and imagine who the creator might be and what type of person they were as I believe this gets imprinted on the vessel in some mysterious way”.
In 2003, our family moved from Maryland to Montana in search of a new and different way of life. It was here that I discovered the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts and began taking adult ceramic classes. I transitioned from collector to creator. We eventually made our way back to the East Coast and settled here in this wonderful gem of a city. I’ve been working in clay now for several years and have taken college level classes to hone the craft. I enjoy exploring with new techniques, glaze palettes, and forms and am still working on my niche. Using my hands to breathe life into clay is one of the most satisfying of endeavors. I am a nurse by training and have used my hands to assist with healing for many years, but being able to push the boundaries in the art realm has cracked open a side of me that had been rendered dormant by the demands of the left brain. Functional art inspires me. Knowing that I am creating a simple form that will be used in the daily ritual of nourishment is very satisfying and humbling. What could be more personal than the mug that one uses daily to drink from...to touch to ones lips; that favorite mug? Creating pottery is my obsession. |
