Artist statementI live on a Florida island where there is a never-ending source of inspiration for painting. I paint every day, and still it’s not enough. There’s just not enough time in life to paint all of what is possible. Every second, nature shifts with the movement of the sun, clouds, and wind. My job is to capture a single magic moment in the life of mist and tide. HistoryMary Hubley grew up in Philadelphia and the Jersey shore immersed in the world of art. As a teenager, Hubley and her mother (watercolorist Idella Hallowell) would go on plein air adventures to paint the region, from Lancaster County, PA to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Summers were spent painting around her grandmother’s hotel in Ocean City, NJ. Plein air painting captured the immediacy of the moment. While Hubley focuses on oil paintings today, her early watercolor painting involved using the white of the paper, strong light and shadow, avoiding muddiness, restrained brushstrokes, and painting quickly. As a professional artist, Hubley worked as an illustrator for several Philadelphia ad agencies and corporations including 10 years with RCA Corporation. During this time, she created illustrations for corporate ads, video productions, and magazines. For a while, she painted part time while she pursued corporate life as a book editor for McGraw-Hill Books, a director for a Fortune 500 consulting company, and a web designer for her own web company. Also during that time, she illustrated over 25 books and trade magazines. She now does full time oil painting. Hubley currently shows her work in several prominent Southern U.S. galleries. She gives regular painting workshops, and has been included in many private collections worldwide. Hubley has traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She is drawn to waterways and beaches everywhere she goes. Adventure travel has brought her an overwhelming desire to go further, explore more coastlines, and narrate life more fully through her paintbrush. Hubley lives and works in St. Augustine, Florida. “St. Augustine feels like an ancient Spanish seaside village. It has the same intensity of sunlight, warm summers, and mild winters. It’s beach casual – a place to practice yoga, beachcomb, and enjoy the seashore.” Hubley regularly goes out into nature to do plein air painting.
