Debbie Powers
Debbie Powers was born and raised in Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University where she was a 3-sport athlete. With a passion for sports and fitness, Debbie became a high school and college physical education teacher and coach. In her 33-year career, she coached high school volleyball, basketball, and tennis, and was the head women’s basketball coach at Ball State University. She co-authored 11 editions of A Wellness Way of Life (McGraw-Hill), a college health and wellness textbook. After retiring in 2006 as assistant professor emerita at Ball State, Debbie and her husband, Jim, moved to St. Augustine. Not content to sit idly on the beach, she wrote and published her memoir, Meeting Her Match, a heartfelt and entertaining chronicle of her life as an aspiring athlete before Title IX, and a coach after. A lover of nature, she also discovered the beauty of Queen Palm tree seed pods, and began painting and decorating them, discovering a hidden talent and enjoyment of art. An avid exerciser, Debbie is an active member of the Ancient City Road Runners. Debbie and Jim have a son who lives in San Jose, CA and a daughter who lives in Prague, Czech Republic.
